Rita and Luís chose to build their home from the forest their great-grandfather had planted sixty years before. A project that was at the root of what would become hull&beam.

With no local sawmill equipped for the task, we set up our own timber processing operation — weeks on site converting Faial cryptomeria into structural-grade beams. After a year of natural drying, every component was CAD-designed and fabricated to the millimetre in a temporary workshop beside the timber stack, and the main structure raised in just a few days.

Traditional timber frame joinery with wooden pegs, cork insulation and biodegradable materials throughout. A structure that breathes — and carries the story of the land it came from.
